According to a 2008 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, Charlotte has
671,588 total residents and 219,609 African Americans who represent 32.7% of
Charlotte's total population. The city of Charlotte has the 19th largest African
American population of any U.S. city. The total population of the Charlotte
metropolitan area in 2007 was estimated at 1.65 million making it the 35th largest
metropolitan area in the country. The metropolitan area's current African American
population is estimated at around 307,886 making African American represent
20.5% of the metro area's total population. African American's in the Charlotte
metropolitan area have more than $9.2 billion in annual purchasing power
and more than 215,000 of the Charlotte area's 300,000 plus African Americans
currently have and use the Internet as a major resource to identify products
and services they wish to purchase.
Black Business Climate
Charlotte is the region's fastest growing cities for African American
businesses. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 estimate, Charlotte has
12,937 African American owned businesses with revenues of $996,149,000 annually.
Along with the city's growing skyline African American businesses continue to
grow as the city and the region grow.
