Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown is a 10-county metropolitan
area. Referred to as "Greater Houston" the area dominates East Texas,
west of the Golden Triangle.
Houston's Demograhics
According to the 2002 U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Houston
has 494,496 African Americans residents. African Americans represent 25.2% of
Houston's total population. The total population of Houston's metropolitan area
in 2007 was estimated at 5.6 million. Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown is
among the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas. The area grew 25.2
percent between the 1990 and 2000 censuses adding more than 950,000 people.
Black Business Climate
Accourding to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 estimate, Houston
has 36,188 African American owned businesses who generate more than $2.3 billion
in annual sales.
