The total population of New York's metropolitan area in 2000 was estimated at 4.1 million. The metropolitan area's current African American population is estimated at around 1.6 million. More than 1.1 million of the New York area's 1.6 million African Americans currently have and use the Internet as a major resource to identify products and services they wish to purchase.

New York is perhaps the nations number one mecca for African American businesses. Accourding to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 estimate, New York has 64,825 African American owned businesses. This means that New York has far and away more African American businesses than any other city in the nation of its size.
