Black Business Climate Richmond's Jackson Ward area was once considered as the "Black Wall Street of the South" with numerous thriving businesses including hotels, theatres, and restaurants along 2nd Street in the Jackson Ward area. The city still celebrates its rich African American business heritage every year during the "2 Street Festival" also held in Jackson Ward. Accourding to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 estimate, Richmond has 9,393 African American owned businesses ranking it 23rd among cities with the greatest number of African American businesses just behind Boston and Orlando and ahead of much larger cities such as Cincinnati and Kansas City.
