Washington, DC Guide

Washington, DC is much more than just the nation's capitol. In addition to being the capitol and a major international city with residents from around the world, Washington is one of the nation's leading cities for African American businesses and professionals. The spirit of entrepreneurship and free enterprise is alive and well in the nation's capitol and well represented within the African American community.

Washington's Demographics

According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau, the city of Washington has 350,455 African Americans residents, making it rank ninth among cities with the largest African American populations, just behind Memphis and ahead of New Orleans. African Americans represent 61.3% of Washington's total population. The total population of Washington's metropolitan area in 2000, was estimated at 7.6 million, making it the nation's fourth largest city behind Chicago and just ahead of the San Franciso-Oakland metropolitan area. The metropolitan area's current African American population is estimated at close to 2 million. Close to 70% of the Washington area's African Americans currently have and use the Internet as a major resource to identify products and services they wish to purchase.

Black Business Climate

Washington is one of the nation's strongest meccas for African American businesses. Accourding to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2002 estimate, Washington metropolitan area has 67,213 African American owned businesses, ranking it third in the nation, only New York and Los Angeles have more. In addition to its large African American business population, Prince George County, MD, just outside Washington has often been reported as the wealthiest African American county in the U.S.
